Brrrrrrrmmmm, brrrrrmmmm, brrrrrmmmmmm
Jeff Cremond Stunt racer (SCR) on the C64 was our go-to car racing game (sorry, Buggy Boy) back in the day. Surprisingly, it holds up pretty well and is still a joy to play.
Hungarian developer, Gergely Patai, re-engineered this awesome C64 racing game and tweaked its physics to run at 50 FPS – yes, you read that right, 50 (dammit!) frames per second! You can get the SCR C64 50FPS version here.
To our surprise, Gergely is now porting this marvel to the Commodore Plus/4! With so many limitations to work around, we’re pretty damn impressed with Gergely’s accomplishments and development skills in squeezing SCR to play on the Plus/4. Not bad for a two week effort!
Gergerli notes the problems he encountered when porting SCR to the Plus/4:
The biggest limitation was RAM space. The original game doesn’t leave much of the C64’s memory untouched, and the Plus/4 has less RAM available but requires an extra 1K for color information. My solution for now was to remove the load/save functionality and the ability to change key bindings so I could get a working game and be able to shuffle things around. At the moment I have just over 2K of memory left, so I should be able to recover some of the missing bits.
We can’t wait to see the finished product!
