Last week Digital Cybercherries’ Hypercharge: No box launched on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and it’s now bundled 50,000 sales.
The developer posted the news on Twitter, noting that the toy shooter has succeeded 40,000 sales in just three days. Cybercherries called the game’s success “surreal. We’re a small team of six indie developers who have brought our childhood dream game to Xbox.”
Hypercharge debuted on Steam Early Access in 2017 and then moved on to a full Nintendo Switch launch in 2020. In the same year, it was released on Steam.
The game two years ago went viral. Part of this may be due to the fact that you’re a shooter, where you play as toy characters who go to war in toy stores, home kitchens and childhood rooms, but targeted marketing aimed at Xbox players also makes a difference.
There’s something about Xbox
Although the game has obviously been released on other platforms, the developers have spent years debating whether to release it for Xbox. Checking out the game on social media, the Xbox appears to be the only version with specific sales figures.
That’s not to say that Cybercherries don’t care about Steam or Switch sales. During 2022, this was emphasized Hypercharge to be a top seller on the former. But it does put into perspective just how important running a game on a console can be, especially for online multiplayer games.
Against the backdrop of a larger surge indie games in 2024, shooters are also basking in this success. In May, Madfinger announced its tactical shooter War in the gray zone accumulated 500,000 sales within two days.
