Netflix has announced the resumption of production of the second season of the “Sandman” series. The news coincides with the 35th anniversary of the DC comics series. According to Netflix, creator Neil Gaiman marked the occasion by writing a letter to fans assuring them that “good things are coming.”
“We never know where our dreams will take us,” Gaiman writes. “I look back and see one clear path stretching behind me. At times in this journey, the way forward seemed impossible. However, when I look at the path ahead, I see no darkness. I see the world of The Sandman continuing to grow, evolve and take new forms.”
In his letter, Gaiman spoke about The Sandman’s unconventional journey, highlighting its departure from conventional superhero narratives. He acknowledged the key role of hard work, overconfidence and key collaborators in bringing the story of Morpheus and Infinite to life. Gaiman’s letter also hinted at the broad narrative trajectory the series will explore, from the Garden of Doom to locations as diverse as Hell, Ancient Greece, and Revolutionary France.
Alan Heinberg, showrunner, and the cast and crew are currently developing the next set of stories. The behind-the-scenes photo shared by Netflix, which you see above, shows Tom Sturridge playing Mara, as well as Mason Alexander Park, who plays Desire. Filming is underway in London, but a release date for the second season has yet to be announced.
The first season of “Sandbox” premiered on August 5, 2022 and received acclaim for its accurate adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book series. The first 10 episodes, based directly on the comics, were followed by a surprise 11th episode released two weeks later.
In GameSpot’s review of The Sandman, which appeared on Netflix after decades of Gaiman holding on to his creative vision, writer Mason Downey says, “Though about half the show relies heavily on viewers wanting to see their favorite panels come to life , the other half feel deeply concerned that newcomers might not “get it”.
Netflix’s decision to resume production comes after a temporary hiatus due to the Hollywood strike. Although the current installment is not listed as a second season, Netflix has ordered additional episodes in December 2022.
