Idol Showdown sees you throw animals, run over people with trucks and jump into shopping carts to destroy opponents in wild one-on-one battles.
This is a game made by fans Galoliv Vtubers, something I know absolutely nothing about. However, not knowing didn’t hurt my ability to enjoy the game, as I tend to like funny fighting games. This one definitely feels like it. While I feel like someone who knows these characters probably has a better idea of why they should appreciate a character jumping into a shopping cart to attack, that doesn’t make it any less funny to me. Many characters have these silly attacks and passes that create all kinds of opportunities and situations for combos, making for silly but also impressive battles.
It’s all a bit unbalanced, but given the quirky nature of the game, it seems appropriate. The varied nature of the attacks, as well as the humor behind many of them, make it feel like a fighter I shouldn’t take seriously. It feels like it’s designed to be filled with some inside jokes that are still entertaining and funny to those who don’t know much about what’s going on. It’s really fun just seeing what you and your opponent can do, so even if you lose, it’s hard to deny that you had a good time. The game also has some interesting additions that allow you to auto-block when you’re not attacking, keeping your meter between fights, and all sorts of little additions that make it welcoming to newbies or change its gameplay.
Idol Showdown very enjoyable as a light fighter to play with friends. Its light-hearted nature adds a lot of fun to figuring out what everyone can do and how the moves interact, the customization options give it some flexibility, and the pixel art is gorgeous.
Idol Showdown is now available for free on Steam.
