Kingdom of the eighties is an 80s style base building game where you have to protect your city from greed while helping your friends and learning more about your family.
You play as a young character named Leader who rides a bicycle, quickly moving from one side of the screen to the other, recruiting children to help you build bases. These bases can be upgraded, weapons can be forged and tools can be made for your child helpers to use.
At first there is no explanation as to why the Greed appear and why they are destroying the land you live on, but you still have to stop them. Recruiting kids is easy, but they often fall prey to greed, so you’ll need to have big kids to help your mission. Each of the additional, key characters in the game has a quest that must be completed in order for them to help you.
These different characters also have a story to give you more insight into who these people are and how they relate to you and your adventures. It also, I’m told, delves into the lore and world-building of previous games in the series, giving you a new perspective on what you’ve seen before in other games.
I had a chance to play the limited demo version Kingdom of the eightieswhere I really fell in love with the visuals and beauty of the game, but stuck around for the bits of story that can be unlocked by growing your base and helping your friends. Kingdom of the eighties looks like a very well polished, balanced game to play – and it’s not even out yet! This is very much worth watching.
Eighties Kingdom is currently in development, but for now you can add it to your Steam wishlist.
