Blackout searches for items and tools in a house filled with corpses and disturbing creatures, but things may not be what they seem.
Marilyn is a witch who ended up on the roof of an unfamiliar house. She’s feeling a little fuzzy, so now isn’t the best time to fly on her broom. For safety, she heads into the house to investigate and find out what’s going on. The place is filled with all sorts of gruesome sights and strange creatures, but none of them seem particularly focused on harming her. Probably. So you’ll be moving carefully around the house looking for items that will open up paths and allow you to progress. Maybe even make some of those disturbing presences happy too. Who knew bathtub monsters loved cured meats?
As an adventure game, some of its puzzles can be quite challenging. There’s not much indication of which items are important and which aren’t, so you’ll be clicking on things a lot. Fortunately, creepy creatures keep things interesting while you explore. There’s always the feeling that while they’re not overly active in seeking your demise, they might change their minds. There are many strange things in the house and a large number of corpses. It feels like things could go wrong at any moment. There is a bit of a twist at the end though, but it takes the game in a completely different direction than most horror games I’ve played. It was a nice touch to cap off a good, creepy adventure.
Blackout might be a more complex adventure game, but it’s short, filled with neat monster art, builds good tension, and has a nice ending that I wasn’t expecting.
Blackout is now available on itch.io.
