U Guide for the weekend of August 11i said i’m having a great time. Marvel’s Avengers, Crystal Dynamics’ attempt at a GaaS (games-as-a-service) superhero action RPG. Well, that fun is largely gone with combat that feels good but lacks impact and a narrative filled with the same quests. I still want to play a superhero action RPG before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 falls on October 20th, so I decided to go back to WB Games Montréal Knights of Gotham.
i talked a lot of shit Knights of Gotham since it came out on October 21, 2022. I named it “average» via several different posts on Kotaku Dot Comand while I still think it’s average at best, Knights of Gotham certainly hits much better than Marvel’s Avengers.
The two games are functionally identical: choose a hero, load into a world, move from one moshpit to another, collect loot to increase your count, rinse and repeat until the credits roll. The main difference is that Knights of Gotham has a gorgeous fight. It is more buoyant than any of the Batman Arkham games, sure, but punching a bad guy in the face has a satisfying aural and visual response that I’ve been missing Marvel’s Avengers.
Compared to WB Games Montréal’s superhero RPG, Knights of GothamThe characters have a lot of weight to them, which gives the impression of weight as you take down thugs on the dark streets of Gotham. It also suffers from an uninspired open world design where the quests are mostly the same but Knights of Gotham just better to play than Marvel’s Avengersand that’s what I’m looking for: something like that feels good And with my tanky Barbara “Batgirl” Gordon almost maxed out, the game looks great, so I’m glad I finally won the campaign. — Levi Winslow
